Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership provide Rail Safety Talks to schools and groups along the routes of our 5 Branch Lines - Crouch Valley, Flitch, Mayflower, Sunshine Coast and Gainsborough Lines. Our core theme - "Use Your Brain - Think Train".
Lynda and Bramwell, a train driver with Abellio Greater Anglia, visit the schools and show a variety of films to the children whilst explaining the dangers of playing on the railway. There is particular attention paid to the overhead electricity lines, explaining the hazards of high voltage power lines and what can happen if these are brought down. The children are encouraged to interact with us through demonstrations and question and answer sessions. In addition, we specifically cover the size, weight and speed of trains, and the correct way to use level crossings.
After the talk we invite the children to take part in our Rail Safety Poster Campaign, where those who participated in our session have a chance to draw what stood out to them and convey the message to others. The CRP team select one to be made into a full size poster, which is displayed at their local station and along the lines. As well as primary schools we also give the talk to scouts, guides and youth groups and from September will be offering this service to senior schools.
