Rail Safety and Resources

Keep safe, stay safe when travelling by train

Visiting a station and catching a train is a great way to travel, as trains are very safe and can carry a large number of people at the same time.

To keep yourself safe when waiting for a train, there are a few things to remember:

Stand behind the yellow line. Passing trains can create strong air turbulence.

Use station walkways, footbridges and crossings. Never go onto the track. Live electrical equipment can cause serious injury.

If you drop something on the track, tell station staff or use the help point. Stay on the platform.

Never go onto the track. Trains can be quiet, travel at high speeds and cannot stop quickly. They may approach from either direction at any time.

Rail 200 History Book

To mark 200 years of the modern railway, ESSCRP commissioned the creation of a dedicated history book. Published in 2025, the book explores the full story of Britain’s railways from their earliest beginnings to the present day. It was authored by a local rail expert and long‑standing station adopter, bringing both knowledge and community insight to the project.

It can be viewed online here
