Hockley Station from Drab to Fab

13 February 2019

Hockley Station has gone through a total transformation since the gardening group from Hockley & Hawkwell U3A adopted the station

The U3A have been adopters since April last year and in that time have planted 12 large barrel planters that are both on the platforms and on the concourse, colourful window boxes brighten the windows at the front of the station and hanging baskets provide a splash of colour to the station entrance.

This month has seen the addition of a large three tier fountain planter which has been colourfully planted  with spring flowers and plants, this stands next to the bike stands at the station entrance. This addition has totally enhanced the area.

A garden has been developed at the Southend end of the London bound platform with a raised bed in the shape of a H, the group have further plans to develop this garden with climbing plants along the fence line and an addition of a bench is planned for later this year.

In December the group provided a beautifully decorated Christmas tree to brighten the booking hall for all to enjoy during the festive season.

With the Support of Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership the group were awarded “Best Station Adopter Group” by the train operator Greater Anglia in 2018 which is a remarkable achievement in their first year of adoption.

We are all looking forward to seeing this ongoing transformation from a once dull and grey station to a blaze of colour that both enhances the station and makes it a great place to be for all who use it.
