Bees’ Needs Week 2024 is an annual event coordinated by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) in England. It runs from July 8th to 14th, 2024.
During this week, various organizations, including conservation groups, businesses, and charities, come together to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and share ideas on how everyone can help bees and other pollinators thrive.
Here are some key points about Bees’ Needs Week 2024:
- Simple Actions to Help Pollinators:
- Grow more nectar-rich flowers, shrubs, and trees (even window or balcony boxes work if you don’t have a garden).
- Allow patches of your garden or land to grow wild.
- Cut grass less frequently.
- Avoid disturbing insect nests and hibernation spots.
- Be mindful of pesticide use.
- Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) Counts:
- Participate in citizen science by spending 10 minutes observing flowers and insects during warm, dry weather from April to September.
- Submit your FIT Counts to the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) to contribute valuable data on pollinator habitats and population changes.
- Bees’ Needs Champions Awards:
- These awards recognize exceptional initiatives by local authorities, community groups, farmers, and businesses that support pollinators.
- Examples include creating wildflower patches, educating communities, or implementing pollinator-friendly measures on farms.
