Railway Safety Educational Team

Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership (ESSCRP) have a team who specialise in working with young people in schools including those with special needs and with community groups.

Team members are Lynda Stone, Terri Ryland Community Rail Partnership Officers and Bramwell Bines a retired Greater Anglia train driver.

Between us we have over 70 years’ experience and knowledge of the railway industry.

We work in partnership with Greater Anglia, Network Rail and British Transport Police to ensure all aspects of rail safety are covered within our presentations.

We provide FREE rail safety awareness programmes to highlight the dangers and promote using the rail system safely. We equip young people with the knowledge and skills enabling them to make positive informed choices in remaining safe on or around our rail network.

Our main audience is key stages 1 and 2 and people with learning disabilities. However, we adapt our program for older students as requested.

The program includes:

  • Visit to the school
  • Presentation including a short DVD
  • Audience participation demonstrations e.g. how electricity passes through your body
  • Travel by train along one of our branch lines to break down barriers and enhance understanding of how to use the railway
  • To make students aware of rail safety issues and effects of trespass and vandalism/graffiti on perceptions of rail travel
  • To encourage themed student art and project for use on stations in partnership with any other community groups
  • Provide rail safety educational resources

Session Information:

  • Key Stage 1 – 30 minute session
  • Key Stage 2 – 60 minute session
  • Travel by train – AM or PM session

However, we can adapt the programme or the length of the session to your specific requirements

Planting at Clacton Station

 Great Bentley School Visit

ESSCRP have been working in partnership with The Bee Friendly Trust and the local primary school. There is a planter from the trust on the station which has plants which will encourage bees.

This project has involved, ESSCRP delivering a rail safety talk at the school, the trust delivering a talk about bees and pollination and the children going to the station to plant the seeds and the plants. The children were able to use the skills they learnt from the safety talk in the station, such as standing behind the yellow lines, waiting whilst the barriers went down for the trains  to cross. ESSCRP and The Bee Trust will continue to work with the school.

Photos include the rail safety talk, school children planting, and the train that was also planted up.

On Sunday the 23rd October we undertook our second walk on the Gainsborough Line, we were lucky the day was fine in fact a great weather day for walking!

Approx 29 people turned up to enjoy the gorgeous countryside and expert guided walk by Keith our station adopter at Chappel Station and for the brave a further walk expertly guided by David and Anne our station adopters at Bures Station. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves we will definitely be repeating!
